What Insurance Do You Really Need?

Most people don't think about insurance until they need it.

While stories of unusual insurance claims occasionally make headlines, insurance serves a much simpler purpose for most New Zealanders: protecting themselves and their families from unexpected financial loss.

One famous case involved a Rolls-Royce that was supposedly attacked by a bear while parked in California. The owner even supplied video footage. Investigators later discovered the "bear" was actually a person wearing a bear costume, and similar claims had been made involving other vehicles.

Thankfully, most insurance claims are far less dramatic.

Insurance exists to help protect us from life's unforeseen events, whether that's rebuilding a home after a fire, replacing stolen belongings, managing medical costs, or providing financial support when illness, injury, or loss of life affects a family.

By paying a premium, we transfer some of our financial risk to an insurer, helping protect ourselves from costs that could otherwise be difficult to manage.

Insurance Isn't a "Set and Forget" Decision

Life changes, and your insurance should change with it.

You may have purchased a home, started a family, changed jobs, increased your income, or taken on new financial commitments. As these milestones occur, it's worth reviewing whether your cover still reflects your needs.

Insurance policies, premiums, and policy wording can also change over time. Those policy update emails are worth more than a quick glance.

Regular reviews can help ensure you're adequately protected and not paying for cover that no longer suits your circumstances.

Protecting Your Home and Belongings

For many people, their home is their largest financial asset.

House insurance can help cover the cost of repairing or rebuilding your home after events such as fire, flooding, storms, or natural disasters.

Contents insurance helps protect the belongings you've worked hard to accumulate, including furniture, appliances, electronics, clothing, and personal valuables.

When considering contents insurance, it's worth asking:

  • Do I know the replacement value of everything I own?

  • Does my policy provide "new for old" replacement?

  • Is accidental damage included?

  • Are high-value items adequately covered?

The right policy depends not only on what you own but also on your comfort with risk and the level of protection you're looking for.

Protecting Your Income and Family

Your ability to earn an income is often one of your most valuable assets.

If your partner, children, or other loved ones depend on your income, life insurance may provide financial support if you're no longer there to provide for them.

A life insurance payout can help with:

  • Mortgage repayments

  • Household expenses

  • Education costs

  • Outstanding debt

Income protection insurance can also provide valuable support if illness or injury prevents you from working for an extended period.

Nobody wants to claim on these policies, but having them in place can provide significant peace of mind when it's needed most.

Considering Health Insurance

New Zealand's public healthcare system provides excellent care, particularly for acute and emergency treatment.

However, private health insurance may offer faster access to specialists, diagnostic testing, and elective procedures.

When comparing health insurance options, it's important to understand:

  • What is covered

  • What is excluded

  • Surgical and non-surgical benefits

  • Specialist consultations

  • Cover for medications not funded by Pharmac

Understanding the detail of a policy can make a significant difference when you need to use it.

Making Informed Insurance Decisions

Before choosing or renewing insurance cover:

  • Review your insurance regularly

  • Compare both price and cover

  • Understand exclusions and excesses

  • Consider the risks you and your family face

  • Seek professional advice when needed
